Five Ways to Help Your Elderly Parent Feel Comfortable in Their New Home

Blog

Transitioning to a new home can be an overwhelming experience for anyone, but it can be particularly challenging for elderly parents. Ensuring your loved ones feel comfortable and secure in their new environment is crucial. Here are five ways to help them adjust and feel at ease in their new home.

1. Personalize Their Space

One of the most effective ways to help your elderly parent feel comfortable is by personalizing their living space. Bring familiar items, such as family photos, cherished knick-knacks, and favorite pieces of furniture from their previous home. Decorate their new home to reflect their personality and tastes, which can provide a sense of continuity and familiarity.

2. Create a Safe Environment

Safety is paramount when setting up a new home for an elderly parent. Make sure to assess the home for any potential hazards, such as:

  • Installing grab bars and handrails in bathrooms and along staircases.
  • Ensuring pathways are clear of clutter to prevent trips and falls.
  • Placing nonslip mats in areas that may get wet, like bathrooms and kitchens.

By proactively addressing safety concerns, you can help your parent feel more secure and confident in their new home.

3. Encourage Social Connections

Maintaining social connections is essential for an elderly parent's mental and emotional well-being. Encourage them to stay connected with friends, family, and community groups. Introduce them to neighbors and local senior centers where they can participate in various activities and make new friends. Regular social interactions can significantly enhance their sense of belonging and joy in their new environment.

4. Provide Technological Support

Modern technology can be a great asset for elderly parents, enabling them to stay independent and connected with loved ones. Set up easy-to-use devices like smartphones, tablets, or even voice-activated assistants. Teach them how to use video calling apps so they can keep in touch with family members. Additionally, consider installing a security system with emergency features that they can access easily.

5. Buy Lift Chairs for Added Comfort

Lift chairs are a wonderful addition to your elderly parent's new home, offering both comfort and practicality. These chairs are designed to assist individuals in sitting down and standing up with ease, reducing the risk of falls and promoting independence. When choosing a lift chair, consider the following:

  • Choose a model with adjustable settings to customize the chair's positioning for maximum comfort.
  • Ensure the fabric and cushioning are durable and comfortable.
  • Consider additional features like heat and massage for an added layer of relaxation.

A lift chair can significantly improve your parents' daily routine by providing them with a comfortable and safe seating option. Contact a local supplier, such as Lakeway Mobility, to learn more.

Navigating Public Transportation in a Big City

I come from a small town. It's so small that there is no public bus service—you can walk everywhere within city limits. People drove their cars if they wanted to leave town. At home, I rarely saw a taxi, and subways were something I only saw in movies. Moving to New York City was a shock in many ways, but learning how to get around using public transportation was one of the biggest hurdles that I faced. I didn't know how much to tip a taxi driver or how to find my way around on the bus. However, I did eventually learn. I know that there must be many people who are facing the same learning curve that I was facing a few years ago. I started this blog to help other small town natives like me learn how to get around in the big city.
